Leaflet Against Sellout Democrat
Elliot Engel for Supporting the Peru
Free Trade Agreement!
Elliot Engel will be among the guest of honor at tomorrow's
League of Humane Voters of New York City benefit party. Unfortunately,
Engel is no friend of animals-- he voted on Thursday for the Peru Free Trade
Agreement, which will expand factory farming and destroy rainforest wildlife
habitat!
DATE: Tomorrow, Saturday, November 9th, 2007 at 7:30
PM until at least 8:30PM
LOCATION: in front of Jivamukti Yoga
School. 841 Broadway, 2nd
floor, New York, NY (Between 14th and 13th Streets)
Organized by Global Justice for Animals.
(NOTE: We are protesting Elliot Engel, NOT the League of Humane Voters of New
York City, which does important work for animals. We are also NOT calling a
boycott on the fundraiser. Feel free to attend and support the work of
dedicated activists-- just be sure to give Engel hell)
Background:
Elliot Engel Votes for Animal Abuse!
On Thursday, Elliot Engel voted for the Peru Free Trade
Agreement, the #1 bill on the agenda of the National Pork Producers' Council, a
bill also supported by the American Meat Institute, International Dairy Foods
Association, National Cattlemen's Beef
Association, National Chicken Council, National Milk Producers Federation,
National Turkey Federation, U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association, and the
U.S.A. Poultry & Egg Export Council.
45 animal rights groups, including the League of Humane Voters of New York
City, wrote to Engel urging him to vote "no" on the Peru Free Trade
Agreement, but instead Engel supported an agreement that will eliminate
agricultural tariffs on factory farm exports to Peru, resulting in a vast
increase in consumption of factory farmed pork and other animal products their
consumption. The agreement will also contribute to the
destruction of rainforest wildlife habitat, and allow for fighting cocks to be
imported to Peru A majority of Democrats had the courage to stand up the
factory farmers and polluters and vote NO on the Peru Free trade agreement, but
Elliot Engel decided to side with corporate lobbyists and George Bush and sell
out the animals
Challenge Engel at the event. He is a friend of factory farmers, NOT
animals, and does NOT deserve to be honored at a
pro-animal event.
Call Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton and urge them to vote NO on the Peru
Free Trade Agreement when it comes to a vote in the Senate this coming week.
Call Hillary Clinton's legislative assistant Andrew Shapiro at (202) 224-4451
and Chuck Schumer's legislative assistant Carmencita Whonder at (202) 224-6542.
Join Global Justice for Animals and our allies at the NYC People's Referendum
on Free Trade at their protest on Tuesday at Noon at Hillary Clinton's office
at 48th Street
and 3rd Avenue.
Hillary intends to vote for the Peru Free Trade Agreement and we must urge her
to revere her position!
