Who: NYC People's Referendum on Free Trade, a coalition of Latino and Korean community organizations, labor unions, Latin American solidarity groups, and animal rights, environmental, peace, human rights, and AIDS activist organizations., as well as the Colombian Polo Democratico USA and Koreans Against War and Neoliberalism.

 

What: During Rep.Charlie Rangel's fundraiser for the National Leadership PAC at Tavern on the Green, activists dressed as Rangel will dance with the Devil (with the face of George W. Bush), while singing songs including Aretha Franklin hits with new lyrics praising free trade agreements (Franklin will be performing at the fundraiser). . Protestors wielding anti-free trade placards will shout down the diabolical duo with chants condemning the free trade agreements currently being pushed by Rangel and Bush.

 

When: TODAY, Wednesday, August 8, 2007, 5:45PM

 

Where: 67^th Street at Central Park West, southeast corner.

 

Why: Charlie Rangel is chair of the House Ways and Means committee. In this role he struck a deal with the Bush administration to pass of Bush administration free trade agreements with Peru and Panama over the objections of labor unions, small farmers in the US and abroad and activists addressing environmental protection, AIDS, animal rights, human rights, hunger relief, and other issues. Earlier this week he led a delegation to Peru as part of his push to pass the Peru agreement, which he intends to push towards a Congressional vote in September.
